Avoid Gassy Foods

Why do people with IBS often feel bloated?  These individuals may be sensitive to normal amounts of gas. Many foods are only partially digested in the small intestines. When they reach the colon (large intestine), further digestion takes place, which may cause gas and cramps.

The most common gas-producing foods are legumes (such as beans) and cruciferous vegetables (such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli). Some other foods that may aggravate the symptoms are milk and dairy products, certain fruits or vegetables, whole grains, artificial sweeteners, and/or carbonated beverages.

Several foods contain short chain carbohydrates called FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols). FODMAPs are poorly absorbed and can result in bloating and gas production.  Please click this link to see the list of foods that fall into these categories. http://www.uptodate.com/
